The Fiat Panda is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. To mark the occasion, the functional series is being completely renewed and expanded to include the new Fiat Panda Sport body variant. The range now includes five equipment versions, divided into the three body variants Urban, Sport and Cross.
This makes it even easier for customers to choose the Fiat Panda that best suits their tastes and requirements. The entry-level variant is called the Fiat Panda. The Fiat Panda City Life and Fiat Panda Wild 4×4 equipment variants are aimed at people who prefer an urban lifestyle. The new Fiat Panda Sport is configured for particularly active customers who are looking for a distinctive style. The Fiat Panda City Cross and Fiat Panda Cross appeal to customers with wanderlust.
The new Fiat Panda is the next evolution of a range that has been synonymous with charm, user-friendliness and versatility since 1980. But the Fiat Panda is much more than that: a brand in its own right with functional and emotional content, a guarantee of individual mobility. With these characteristics, the Fiat Panda has become an icon of Italian creativity, just like the Fiat 500, the Vespa Piaggio scooter, the Moka Bialetti espresso maker or the "Cubo" ashtray by Bruno Munari.
"In the forty years since 1980, the Fiat Panda has won hearts as an iconic city car and set many records. It was the best-selling car in Italy for eight years in a row, along with the Fiat 500, and the market leader in its segment in Europe, with more than 375.000 units sold per year," says Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia & Abarth Brands. "Among the reasons for this success are the numerous special models we have introduced in recent years, which have broken new ground for a city car. Special models such as the 2018 Fiat Panda Waze and the 2019 Fiat Panda Trussardi, which became known as the 'luxury Panda', have helped make the range the best-selling city car in Europe. Now the baton is being passed to the new Fiat Panda, which takes a big step forward with developments in the areas of environmental protection, technology, character, driving pleasure and functionality. It is these factors that have always distinguished the Fiat Panda. Ingenious solutions have enabled the 'great box' to evolve over the years while still remaining true to itself."
The new Fiat Panda is the only model in the segment to offer a choice of two drive technologies (front-wheel and four-wheel) and four engine concepts (hybrid, petrol in combination with 4×4 drive, natural gas and LPG[2]). The Fiat Panda offers all this in a familiar and robust form that looks charming and friendly everywhere, whether in the city or on a remote mountain slope. It is complemented by the attributes that have earned the Fiat Panda an excellent reputation worldwide: compact body dimensions, spacious and highly configurable interior and original color combinations, with the new Panda even available in two-tone paint finishes.
Fiat Panda, Fiat Panda City Life and Fiat Panda Wild 4×4
The entry-level model in the range is the Fiat Panda, which is suitable for every journey with intelligent equipment details. In the new model year, the seats are covered in gray-black fabric. The dashboard is black, which ensures a high-quality look. The new Fiat Panda will initially only be offered with a particularly efficient mild hybrid drive, which combines a 51 kW (70 hp) 1,0-liter gasoline engine with electric support when starting off. A 2021 kW (50 hp) 69-liter four-cylinder that runs on autogas (LPG) will also be available from the first quarter of 1,2.
A new addition to the range is the Fiat Panda City Life. The most important model version is aimed at customers who expect the best price-product ratio in a city car without sacrificing an attractive and distinctive style. The Fiat Panda City Life features a new and confidently designed front bumper, redesigned side skirts and 15-inch steel rims in the Life design. Other eye-catchers on the exterior include black side trim strips and black roof rails.
The urban soul of the new Fiat Panda City Life is also evident in the interior. The driver and passengers sit on newly designed seats with gray-black covers that feature horizontal stripes. Also new are the anthracite dashboard and manual air conditioning. An infotainment system with a seven-inch (17,8 centimeter) touchscreen is available on request, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto*.
The engine range of the new Fiat Panda City Life includes the mild hybrid engine with 51 kW (70 hp), and, expected from the first quarter of 2021, the LPG four-cylinder with 50 kW (69 hp) and the natural gas (CNG) powered two-cylinder TwinAir engine with 52 kW (70 hp).
The Fiat Panda Wild 4×4 is based on the City Life model, but features, among other things, an underbody guard under the front bumper and specific 15-inch steel wheels with a subtle off-road look. In keeping with the four-wheel drive, the vehicle is powered by a 63 kW (85 hp) variant of the TwinAir two-cylinder engine.
Fiat Panda Sports
The new Fiat Panda Sport is aimed at young and dynamic customers who prefer a sporty style with character. The Fiat Panda Sport thus complements the Sport model family, which already includes its own variants of the 500X, 500L and Tipo series. Visual features of the new Fiat Panda Sport are the 16-inch alloy wheels with black and red details on the hub cap, which correspond with chrome-plated sports logos, as well as door handles and exterior mirror caps painted in the body color. Bicolor paint finishes - for example, body in glossy gray, roof in black - and the exclusive body color matt gray are available on request. The new Fiat Panda Sport is only available with a mild hybrid drive with 51 kW (70 hp).
The outstanding features of the interior of the new Fiat Panda Sport include the dashboard in titanium grey, the roof lining in black, dark grey seat covers with red contrast stitching and door panels and inserts in the seat covers made of eco-leather[3]. For even more sportiness, the "Pandemonio" equipment package is available on request. It includes an eco-leather steering wheel[4] with red stitching, red-painted brake callipers and tinted rear windows. The Fiat Panda Sport is equipped with the Uconnect infotainment system as standard.® 7,0 inches, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto*.
Fiat Panda City Cross and Fiat Panda Cross
The third body variant of the new Fiat Panda includes the City Cross and Cross trim levels. Both models are available with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive.
The new Fiat Panda City Cross has been specially developed for customers looking for an affordable city car with the look of an SUV. This makes the new Fiat Panda City Cross the perfect vehicle to take a break from everyday life and immerse yourself in urban adventure. The striking new body colour Ceramic Blue and optionally available bicolour paint finishes freshen up the look. The seats have two-tone covers with eco-leather inserts1) in blue and silver-colored stitching as decoration. The dashboard is in silver gray, and the new infotainment system with a seven-inch monitor is optionally placed in the middle. The standard equipment includes automatic climate control, 15-inch steel wheels in a specific design and daytime running lights with LED technology. Black painted roof rails and side skirts round off the urban look.
The top model in the new model year is the Fiat Panda Cross, which offers an exclusive off-road look with underbody protection under the front bumper and red-painted tow hooks. The standard equipment includes 15-inch steel rims in a new design, exterior mirror caps in the body color and roof rails in a chrome look, automatic climate control, rear parking sensors and the infotainment system with a seven-inch monitor with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto*. The seats are partly made from recycled materials and have eco-leather inserts.1) and a cross lettering. The dashboard, which is clad in wood look, gives the cockpit a very high-quality and modern look.
With front-wheel drive, both the Fiat Panda City Cross and the Fiat Panda Cross are powered by the mild hybrid engine with 51 kW (70 hp). In combination with four-wheel drive, both models use the 63 kW (85 hp) variant of the two-cylinder TwinAir engine.
New infotainment system with seven-inch screen
Depending on the equipment version, the new Fiat Panda is equipped as standard or optionally with a new infotainment system that is controlled via a touchscreen with a screen diagonal of seven inches (17,8 centimeters). The radio also receives digital stations (DAB+). The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™*. Compatible smartphones can be connected wirelessly via Bluetooth®technology and the contents of the smartphone screen are mirrored on the monitor in the center of the dashboard. People on board can make calls, access their music, send and receive messages or receive navigation instructions depending on the traffic situation, all while keeping their eyes on the road at all times.
Mild hybrid drive available for all model versions
The mild hybrid drive technology, which was introduced to the market with the special Fiat Panda Hybrid Launch Edition model, is available for all model versions of the series in the new model year. The mild hybrid drive offers all the advantages of an efficient, compact, lightweight and affordable city car. It is therefore in perfect harmony with Fiat's strategy for innovative technology and sustainable mobility.
Fiat's mild hybrid engine combines a three-cylinder petrol engine, which generates 51 kW (70 hp) from one liter of displacement, with a belt starter generator (RSG), which works in the 12-volt electrical system and supports the combustion engine with an output of 3,6 kW when starting. The RSG draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 11 Ah. A new six-speed gearbox, which is tailored to the characteristics of the mild hybrid drive, ensures the power is transmitted to the front axle.
Compared to the four-cylinder petrol engine 1.2 8V with 50 kW (69 hp) from the FIRE series, the MHEV technology reduces CO2emissions by up to 20 percent without compromising on performance. In addition, the RSG system enables the automatic start-stop system to function much more comfortably and without vibrations than a conventional starter motor.
The mild hybrid engine is combined with a six-speed gearbox, the gear ratios of which further optimise efficiency. The mild hybrid versions of the new Fiat Panda offer owners benefits such as free access to the city centre, cheaper parking or tax breaks (in some European cities), depending on local regulations.
ProClean hygiene equipment package from Mopar®
The new Fiat Panda is available with the Mopar® developed ProClean equipment package is available, which effectively combats germs and pollutants in the interior. The ProClean package consists of three components. A particularly powerful filter in the fresh air supply prevents contaminants from outside from entering the car. It blocks particles and practically 100 percent of allergens, and also reduces the formation of mold and bacteria by 98 percent. An additional, electrically operated air purifier in the passenger compartment catches microparticles such as pollen or bacteria. And finally, a small lamp uses UV light to combat microorganisms on surfaces (e.g. steering wheel, gear stick, seats) while the vehicle is parked.
A role model for sustainability, technology and driving pleasure for 40 years
Retracing the history of the Fiat Panda, which began in 1980, is like leafing through an album of four decades of memories of a car that has evolved to remain up-to-date while remaining true to itself. The secret behind the success of the Fiat Panda, which has become the epitome of a city car, lies in its incredible versatility. Since its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980, the Fiat Panda has won people's hearts as a "great box" full of original, ingenious and surprising ideas.
The 40th anniversary of the Fiat Panda was the starting point for celebrating the Italian automotive icon with three videos on the themes of technology, style and intelligent solutions. Together with expert guests, Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat & Abarth Brands, looked back to the past to reveal the many secrets of the Fiat Panda's success and also took a look into the future of the model.
In short: The Fiat Panda has always been a trendsetter in its segment. In 1990, the Fiat Panda Elettra was one of the first mass-produced electric cars in Europe. In 2006, the Fiat Panda Natural Power was the first mass-produced vehicle with a natural gas engine, followed a year later by the LPG-powered Fiat Panda EasyPower. At the beginning of 2020, the special model Fiat Panda Hybrid Launch Edition revolutionized urban mobility, together with a model from the Fiat 500 series that also features mild hybrid technology.
The Fiat Panda has also often played a pioneering role in technological innovations. In 1983, the Fiat Panda 4×4 was the first microcar with four-wheel drive. In 2013, the Fiat Panda was the first vehicle in the segment to offer the Autonomous City Emergency Braking System. The unmistakable character of the Fiat Panda has always fascinated both the public and the international trade press. In 2004, the Fiat Panda was the first vehicle model in the segment to receive the prestigious title of “Car of the Year”. In 2019, the British magazine “4×4” voted the Fiat Panda 4×4 “2004x5.200 of the Year”. This illustrious success story continues with remarkable records in practice. In 2017, for example, the Fiat Panda was the first city car to reach a mountaineering camp on Mount Everest at an altitude of 4 meters. In 4, a Fiat Panda Cross XNUMX×XNUMX took part in the legendary Dakar desert rally.
But the Fiat Panda was and is commercially successful. After almost eight million units sold worldwide in 40 years, the Fiat Panda is currently the best-selling vehicle in Italy again - for the eighth year in a row. Across Europe, the Fiat Panda's market share increased by three percentage points and, at 17,1 percent, achieved its best result since the introduction of the current model generation in 2012.
