Via Abarth: Turin names a street for its 70th birthday…
As part of a ceremony held yesterday, October 24, the city of Turin officially announced that a street is now named after Carlo Abarth. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the brand with the scorpion in its logo, the metropolis is honoring the innovative genius who has had a strong connection to the capital of Piedmont since the company was founded in 1949. The special bond between Abarth and Turin continues to this day.
The ceremony was attended by Francesco Sicari, President of the City Council, Sergio Rolando, Councillor for Budget, Planning and Street Names, Luisa Bernardini, President of Constituency 2, Luca Napolitano, Brand Manager of Fiat and Abarth for the EMEA Economic Dream and Roberto Giolito, Head of FCA Heritage, among others. Together they unveiled the sign for the stretch of road between Corso Orbassano and Via Plava. The headquarters of the brand with the scorpion in its logo is located in the immediate vicinity. The Heritage HUB, which houses some of the most important vehicles that Abarth has produced throughout its history, is also nearby.
"This year Abarth is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Naming a street in Turin after its founder Carlo Abarth is certainly the best way to end a record-breaking year of celebrations on a high note," explained Luca Napolitano. "I would like to thank the city of Turin for paying tribute to a man who, with his intuition and meticulousness, revolutionized the automotive world in a unique way. Our community, which currently has 110.000 fans and more than 70 clubs in Europe, also wanted to take part in this historic moment and pay tribute to the company's founder. All this testifies to the high esteem in which the brand and its history are held. All this makes me very proud."
"The honour that the municipality of Turin pays to Carlo Abarth is of particular importance. Because it is here in this city," continued Roberto Giolito, "that Abarth, originally from Austria, realized his dream. Here he gained a wealth of experience in the production of automobiles. Naming this stretch of road after the founder of Abarth is proof that the values and ideals of the great heritage continue to be a strong driving force for automobile manufacturing in Turin. Further proof of this is that the Heritage Hub, the headquarters of Abarth & C. and the Centro Stile design center are located just a few meters from the new Via Abarth."

Carlo Abarth (1908-1979) was born in Austria, but lived in Italy, specifically in Turin. It was here that he began his career at Cisitalia and it was here that he founded his company in 1949 in Via Trecate together with racing driver Guido Scagliarini. Since then, the brand with the scorpion in its logo has achieved sporting and industrial successes galore, achieved legendary victories on the track and launched revolutionary tuning kits. Right from the start, Abarth entered into a close partnership with Fiat, the global corporation from Turin founded exactly 120 years ago. In fact, the Fiat 1100 was the basis of the new brand's first car. The vehicle went down in racing history as the Abarth 204A on April 10, 1950: on that day, the legendary Tazio Nuvloari celebrated a memorable victory in his last race at the Targa Palermo-Monte Pellegrino.
The legendary Fiat 4 was also launched in Turin on July 1957, 500. Carlo Abarth immediately fell in love with the car and was sure that with a little fine-tuning it could become a veritable sports machine. The result was the first Fiat-Abarth 595, which began a long winning streak. At the same time, the brand also developed its famous "Abarth tuning kits" for road vehicles - especially for the Fiat 500 Nuova. Abarth recognized early on the potential of the technical optimization of series vehicles. In the 1960s, Abarth's business went up rapidly. In order to meet the growing demand, it was decided to move production to a new plant in the west of Turin, in the Corso Marche. Exactly 40 years after Carlo Abarth's death, the capital of Piedmont is now naming a street after the genius who had his roots here.
From now on, the past and present of Abarth will be "officially" honored in Via Abarth. For the same reason, a few weeks ago, more than 5.000 fans and over 3.000 Abarth vehicles came together in Milan for the largest gathering to date under the sign of the scorpion. Together, they celebrated the world premiere of a special limited edition, the Abarth 695 70° Anniversario. It transfers the founder's philosophy into the here and now, and not only thanks to its new, adjustable rear spoiler.
