Exactly ninety years after its first victory in the Mille Miglia, one of the most demanding road races in motorsport from 1927 to 1957, Alfa Romeo celebrated a triple victory in the event, which is now held as a vintage car rally. The Argentinians Juan Tonconogy/Barbara Ruffini took first place in the 6 Alfa Romeo 1500C 1993 Gran Sport Testa Fissa. Second place went to Giovanni Moceri/Danelia Bonetti in the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport (1928).
The podium was completed by another Italian team, Andrea Vesco/Andrea Guerini in the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport Zagato (1929). On the approximately 1.600-kilometer (1.000-mile) route from Brescia to Rome and back, the more than 400 teams had to approach a total of 112 light barriers with an accuracy of one hundredth of a second and also complete six regularity tests.
While the winner and third-placed cars came from private teams, the second-placed car came from the Alfa Romeo factory museum. This Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport bore the starting number 30 - the same number with which Grand Prix star Giuseppe Campari and co-driver Giulio Ramponi achieved the first Mille Miglia victory for Alfa Romeo in 1928.
To mark the 90th anniversary of this historic victory, Alfa Romeo supported the 2018 Mille Miglia not only with four original racing cars from the factory museum, but also with logistical support. Among other things, a fleet of 30 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfa Romeo Stelvio was available to the organizer.
The classic cars were also able to complete a test on the Alfa Romeo factory museum's own test track in Arese. Here, the Mille Miglia participants were greeted by Marcus Ericsson and Charles Leclerc, the current drivers of the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team.
